The KNM exam: how it works

The Knowledge of Dutch Society exam: what it tests, how it works and how to register.

Draft · not yet reviewed by a teacher

What is KNM?

KNM stands for Knowledge of Dutch Society. It is a compulsory part of the civic integration exam for most people who have to integrate.

The exam tests what you need to know to take part in the Netherlands: about work, housing, healthcare, education, public bodies, history and the rule of law.

How does the exam work?

You take the exam on a computer at a DUO exam location. You have 45 minutes. The questions are multiple choice with pictures, in simple Dutch (level A2).

Since 1 July 2025 the exam follows new attainment targets. They are divided into eight themes. The focus is on knowledge: knowing how the Netherlands works.

Registering, costs and results

You register through Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl. The exam costs €50 (2026). Some asylum permit holders under the Civic Integration Act 2021 have free attempts.

You get the result within eight weeks. Register in good time: sometimes you have to wait weeks for a place.
